Porsche – Brand history, legendary models, current offer

Porsche is a German car manufacturer, founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche, whose son Ferry Porsche took over the management of the company in 1950. It is currently owned by Volkswagen AG. The company specializes in the production of sports and luxury cars for sale under its own brand

Porsche has made many remarkable achievements: it was responsible for the design of the first hybrid car (1927), the first mass-produced turbo-charged car (1959) and one of the most popular sports cars today (911). They have won numerous international awards, such as six Carrera Cups, four World Rally Championships, three Trans Am Series championships and a victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours in impressive style 17 times.

The Porsche emblem is a coat of arms with an armored knight with two crossed swords and has been associated with the company since 1923.

The first car produced by Porsche was the P-1, which Ferdinand Porsche won its class in 1938 in the Coupe Internationale de l’Automobile.

In the 1940s, the factory was virtually destroyed by Allied bombing raids, but was rebuilt and became a major manufacturer of sports cars. Porsche released its famous 356 in 1950 and its iconic 911 in 1963, which has been winning hearts and minds ever since.

The company currently produces models such as the 911 (considered one of the most successful racing cars in motorsport history), Boxster, Cayman and Panamera.

Porsche today has operating revenues of $ 17 billion and produces approximately 188,000 cars per year. Each car is painstakingly handcrafted at sporadically outsourced factories to Germany, and nearly all are hand painted at the Porsche factory. The distinctive sound made by their flat six-cylinder engine is considered by some to be one of the most distinctive car sounds in the world.

Porsche employs nearly 2,500 people in the research and development department, most of whom work at the company’s headquarters in Stuttgart. Other important Porsche centers are Porsche Engineering (founded as an independent company in 2003), Porsche Consulting (also in Stuttgart) and Porsche Digital, which deals with the company’s presence on the Internet.

Porsche is best known for its iconic sports cars, but also produces supercars for the high-performance enthusiast, such as the 918 Spyder.

The distinctive features of Porsche cars are air-cooled rear engines, a boxer (or flat engine) configuration and the famous Porsche crest and headlights.

Porsche is a public company listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange under the symbol “POAHY” after it was delisted from the London Stock Exchange in 2015.
